What is Geography?



  •  Geography is simply," the science that studies the Earth's physical features, atmosphere, and resources.

  • It is a process that deals with the study of various components of Earth such as Water, landforms, marine ecosystem, and the environment.

  • The term Geography is derived from the Greek word "Geo"(meaning Earth) and "Graphos" (meaning to write about), explicating " the study of Earth".

  • There are subfields in Geography consisting of Geomorphology, Climatology, Human geography, Meteorology, Economic geography, population, and political geography.

  • Geography can also be described as a spatial science that deals with various aspects of social science (eg; history, anthropology, economics, psychology), physical science (eg; Climate and weather), and geospatial data science (eg; GIS and Remote Sensing).

  • Through the study of Geography, students learn to read the maps and interpret the information at local and global scales. Similarly, the study helps to acquire ground-based data and utilize it for making maps through the digitization process.
