Meaning and Types of Meteorological Hazards

Image
What are Meteorological Hazards? Meteorological Hazards are extreme events, caused due to anomalies and instability in weather. Hazards like Cyclones, Tornadoes, Thunderstorms, Hailstorms, Cloudbursts all have enormous amount of energy to disrupt normal life and cause heavy damage to all life forms on Earth. Meteorological Hazards are weather related phenomena which are produced by certain imbalance in the Earth's atmosphere. These are violent and sudden events caused due to weather forming process and they cause serious damage to human lives and to the environment. Strong winds, excessive rainfall, extreme heat and the weather is mainly responsible for occurrence of meteorological hazards. Types of Meteorological Hazards: 1. Cyclones: The cyclones are irregular wind movements involving closed air circulation around a low pressure centre. This closed air circulation is caused by atmospheric disturbances over Earth's Surface. Cyclones are associated with destructive and viole...

Significance of Environmental Conservation

Image
What is the meaning of Environmental Conservation? Environmental Conservation is the practice of preserving the natural world to prevent it from collapsing as a result of human activities, such as imbalance in agricultural activities, deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. Whereas, utilization of land resources in abundance can also result in deterioration of the environment. Factors responsible for Environmental Degradation: 1. Deforestation: It is a process of logging or burning of forests in order to remove them. Deforestation happens for a variety of causes, such as when trees or charcoal they produce is utilized as fuel or sold as a commodity and when cleared land is turned into pastureland for cattle, farms and communities. Rapid growth of population and urban sprawl are two major causes of deforestation. However, the use of forest land for agriculture, animal grazing, harvest of fuelwood and logging are some of the other causes of deforestation. It ultimately leads to ...

Types of Landforms and factors affecting Landform development

Image
  A) What are Landforms? Geomorphology is the significant branch of physical geography. It is defined as a science of description of various forms on Earth's Surface.  On the other hand, geomorphology is termed as the scientific study of surface features on Earth involving interpretative description of landforms, their origin, nature and mechanism of geomorphological processes which evolves the land. With diverse physical characteristics, landforms are spread throughout the planet. Together, they constitute a specific terrain and their physical arrangement in the landscape forming topography. The features of landforms include Slope, elevation, rock exposure, stratification and rock type. These are further categorized into many different landforms based on their physical features and shapes. Examples of distinctive landforms include, mountains, valleys, plateaus, glaciers, hills, loess, desserts, shoreline and plains. Features such as volcanoes, lakes, rivers, mid oceanic ridge...

Soil formation and its significance

Image
A] What is Soil? Soil is the most important resource for us, because we get almost all our food directly or indirectly from it. Vegetables, fruits and animal products and much of our clothing, everything is obtained from soil. It has been derived from parent rock material through process of Weathering( breakdown / dissolving of rocks and minerals on the Earth's surface due changes in the temperatures). Nature and its elements also play important role in existence of soil. Changes in temperatures, running water and wind, contribute in evolution of soil. Chemical and organic changes in soil are also equally important. Whereas, these factors do not act on soil independently or in isolation, but in close association with each other. Fine vegetal and animal remains known as Humus add fertility to soil. It results in making soil fertile. Faulty agricultural practices, deforestation and overgrazing have led to soil erosion in many parts. As a result, soil conservation through improved ag...

Significance of Remote Sensing and GIS.

Image
A]   What is meant by Remote Sensing? Remote Sensing is a process of collecting information of an object with the help of Electromagnetic Radiation from a particular distance in space, without being in direct physical contact with the object. The information is recorded by various sensors attached to the platforms established at great distance in space. These sensors record the reflected and radiated electromagnetic energy from various features on the Earth's surface. Further, the recorded information is used to form images and maps. For a remote sensing system to work, sensors, cameras, platforms, etc. are required in order to collect, transmit and analyze the recorded data. B]  Sensors and Platforms: Remote Sensing platforms can be defined as the structures or vehicles on which remote sensing instruments are mounted. Typical platforms are satellites and aircrafts, but they can also include radio- controlled airplanes, balloon kits for low altitude remote sensing, ...

What is Climate Change? What are the factors affecting it?

Image
What is Climate? Climate refers to the typical characteristic pattern of weather elements at a particular place for a longer period. It can be described as the average measurement of temperatures, wind, humidity, snow and rain in a particular region over the course of years.  Whereas, the Weather conditions at a place can change from hour to hour and day to day, for a shorter period of time.   Climate change or Global Climatic Crisis is a serious matter that is being experienced in different parts of the world. It has increased the rate of mortalities through different aspects. The changes in the climate may be natural, but since 1800s human activities have been the main cause of Climate change, due to factors like burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, which produce heat- trapping gases that are harmful for the environment.  As a result, excess usage of these resources is the main reason we are going through major environmental issues which act as ob...
